Finance Minister Seeks Votes for Greek Austerity Plan

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos on Monday renewed his call to the country's opposition parties to support the government's five-year austerity plan amid rumblings of discontent within the ruling Socialist Party.

In remarks to Parliament, Mr. Venizelos said passage of the measures was tantamount to endorsing Greece's continued membership in the euro zone.

"It would be great if it were endorsed by the broadest majority of the parties who believe in the European identity and European prospects of the country," he said. "We don't want it to be passed with just the 155 deputies of the Socialists."

"Come and send the message of unity and consensus," he added. "It would be great if we emerged from the vote with at least 180 votes."

His remarks came at the start of a two-day debate over a €28 billion ($39.7 billion) package of cutbacks and tax measures that the Socialist government has promised the country's international creditors in exchange for a second bailout to avoid default.
