Greece’s cabinet on Thursday approved a four-year austerity deal after days of high-octane debate by parliamentary deputies and officials from the governing socialist party.
George Papandreou, prime minister, appeared to have regained control of his Panhellenic Socialist Movement after an eight-hour session of its political council, despite outspoken criticism of his government’s efforts to save the country from default.
The austerity package will now be voted through parliament this month, opening the way for the country’s second bail-out in 13 months by the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
The angry mood extended to socialist-led trade unions, which staged a 24-hour strike on Thursday and to hundreds of protesters at a tent camp in Syntagma Square opposite parliament.
