Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou is meeting with President Karolos Papoulias to begin talks on a coalition government, after narrowly surviving a vote of confidence in parliament.
"I will do whatever I can to help form a coalition government," Mr. Papandreou said in remarks that were televised nationally.
The meeting follows a week of turmoil in Greek politics that climaxed in a vote of confidence early Saturday morning. Papandreou carried the vote, but has signalled he is ready to step down to pave the way for a coalition government to take over.
But it remains far from certain that major opposition parties will agree to a coalition under a Socialist prime minister.
