The first step towards Greece getting a “national unity” government was taken today with the announcement that Lucas Papademos, formerly vice president of the European Central Bank, would lead it. He was named prime minister and made a short, sober statement after receiving the “order” to form a government by the Greek president of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias, whose role is largely ceremonial.
Here are the next steps:
According to the plan –and here we ought to exercise caution, as things haven’t always gone “according to plan” in Athens- the new government is to be sworn in at the presidential palace Friday at 12 GMT (1400 local). The information to look out ahead of the ceremony are the names of the new key cabinet ministers, if they are replaced: for example, will Evangelos Venizelos stay on as finance minister?
After the new government is sworn in, the formal process of approving it begins. The exact timing of when this process will start depends on how quickly Mr Papademos and his newly-sworn in ministers will be able to put together what in Greece is called “policy declarations”, i.e. the plan of what they are going to do after they officially become government.
