Greece's government faces a critical week as union opposition to new austerity climaxes in a 48-hour general strike ahead of Thursday's tough parliamentary vote on those measures.
The vote comes as euro-zone countries scramble for a comprehensive solution to the bloc's debt crisis in time for a European summit Sunday, which will also decide whether to release badly needed aid for Greece.

"It is the responsibility of all of us towards the country, towards the Greek people, to show a solid front, unity, calm and sobriety," Mr. Papandreou said.
