Greek parliament backs austerity plan

The Greek parliament has given final approval to a new austerity package by 154 to 144 votes, hours after the European Commission approved the next instalment of its current bail-out loan.

Thursday’s vote came after a second day of violent protests in the capital that saw the death from a heart attack of a 53-year-old construction worker during clashes between riot police, masked extremists and members of the Communist-led Pame union.

It was the worst street violence in Athens since May last year, when three employees died in a fire at a bank branch started by a petrol bomb.

Extremists belonging to self-styled anarchist groups have made a practice of disrupting peaceful protests by provoking clashes with police.

Police fired teargas at extremists throwing stones and petrol bombs at Pame unionists in the front row of a crowd of about 50,000 demonstrators outside the parliament building.
