Monti, Merkel Talks Focus on Growth

The leaders of Germany and Italy on Wednesday urged the European Union to do more to promote jobs and economic growth in order to persuade European citizens to stay the course on painful reform measures needed to stabilize the euro currency.

Amid rising concern that growing unemployment, the deteriorating European economy, and budget cuts that affect public services for ordinary Europeans could spark anti-European protests across the continent, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti urged European leaders to devote time during their next summit on Jan. 30 to discuss specific ways to promote economic growth in the 27-nation bloc.

"In addition to discussing questions about solid budgets, we are proposing that the next council meeting discuss how to promote economic growth and especially how to create jobs," Ms. Merkel said after a meeting with Mr. Monti in Berlin.

The two leaders did not suggest that Europe should adopt any new economic stimulus programs. Ms. Merkel said Europe should use existing resources, such as making EU structural funds more efficient and targeting them better to promote jobs and growth.
