Greeks in two minds over defiance

The leftwing anti-austerity coalition that stunned Greece’s political elite and finance markets when it came second in the country’s general election on Sunday, would come top in a fresh vote, according to an opinion poll.

Alexis Tsipras, the 37-year-old leader of Syriza, appears to be riding an unprecedented wave of popular support after declaring that Greece should pull out of its international bailout, place its banks under state control and call a moratorium on paying back debt.

Syriza would capture 27.7 per cent of the vote, compared with the 16.8 per cent it won on Sunday, putting Mr Tsipras in pole position to become the country’s next prime minister at the head of a coalition government, according to a survey by Marc, Athens-based pollsters. Talks to build a coalition government appeared to have collapsed last night, bringing Greece closer to fresh elections.
