The Euro Is Absolutely Totally Fine. Honest.

What is all the fuss about? The euro is just fine. There’s absolutely no danger whatsoever of it ever breaking up. The European Union has plenty of cash to help out any struggling member. Portugal is not Ireland. Spain is not Portugal. Greece is just Greece. No crisis. Nothing to see here.

That’s the message from the heavy-hitting political and financial figures in the euro area, so it must be true.

On Nov 23, French finance minister Christine Lagarde said it was “out of the question” to dismantle the euro zone. On Nov 22, European Central Bank governing board member Erkki Liikanen said that the position of the euro was “not at all in question”. On Nov 22, European commissioner Olli Rehn said that talk of dismantling the euro is “irresponsible.” ECB board member Ewald Nowotny described such talk as “ridiculous.”

Phew. Glad we cleared that up.
