Greece's conservative prime minister brought more members of the Socialist party—his traditional rival—into the government on Monday following the exit of a third coalition partner, which had balked at pushing through difficult cutbacks.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who leads the New Democracy party, was forced to shuffle his cabinet after the junior partner, the Democratic Left, pulled its ministers out last week.
The remaining partner, Pasok, now has about a third of the cabinet positions, a development that could see them exert more influence in day-to-day policy decisions.
Pasok party leader and former finance minister Evangelos Venizelos was elevated to deputy prime minister and foreign minister. Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras, who has overseen fiscal adjustment and economic changes in the year-old government, will stay on.
