Is it time for European debt restructuring?

Economist
January 13-17, 2011

Laurence Kotlikoff (Jan. 13)
Countries should analyse carefully and weigh whether it's worth fighting the panic

Viral Acharya (Jan. 13)
Debt restructuring should be paired with bank recapitalisation

Michael Pettis (Jan. 14)
Europe should reduce its debt burden as quickly as possible

Gilles Saint-Paul (Jan. 14)
It is still time to emphasise fiscal consolidation

Michael Heise (Jan. 14)
Rushing into restructuring would be a big mistake

Hyun Shin (Jan. 15)
Fix the banking system, and the sovereign debt crisis will fix itself

Harold James (Jan 15)
There's a strong moral and political case against restructuring

Paul Seabright (Jan 15)
Stop pretending default isn't necessary, start preparing for it

Michael Bordo (Jan. 17)
Limited benefits to default without a tighter fiscal union

John Makin (Jan. 17)
Restructuring is necessary to address a solvency crisis

About

This blog is dedicated to the understanding of the current Greek (but also European) economic, political and institutional crisis. It was created by Prof. Aristides Hatzis of the University of Athens, after many requests by his students who seek a source of reliable analysis on the Greek current affairs. Its aim is to post commentary and reports published mainly in the major U.S. and European media and to encourage a rigorous discussion.
