German Court Ruling Advances Euro-Zone Debt Strategy

Germany's supreme court ruled that the financial bailouts of Greece and other struggling euro members are legal, dismissing complaints that they violate Germany's constitution and removing a potential threat to Chancellor Angela Merkel's handling of the euro-zone debt crisis.

But the Federal Constitutional Court also said Ms. Merkel's government needs to seek permission from parliament when taking on further financial burdens in Europe, potentially making future bailout decisions more complicated. Plaintiffs including a lawmaker from Ms. Merkel's own center-right coalition had challenged the legality of taxpayer bailouts of Greece and other indebted euro-zone countries.

A ruling against the bailouts would have thrown Europe's entire strategy for dealing with the crisis into disarray.
