According to Klimaka, an organization that runs a helpline in Greece for people considering suicide, recent months have seen the suicide rate go up from 1 person a day in 2009 to more than 2 per day this year.
Klimaka is a nongovernmental organization in Greece that operates a helpline for those who want to talk about suicide. Today's English edition of the Greek paper Kathimerini reports that Klimaka is seeing an alarming increase in suicides.
In the past few months, the helpline received an average of 25 calls each day, a sharp rise from about 10 calls a day in 2009. Also, actual suicides have gone up by more or less the same percentage. While one suicide a day was recorded last year, that has climbed to more than two per day in 2010.
