Greece’s prime minister announced on Tuesday the appointment of Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, an Italian former finance minister who said “taxes are a beautiful thing” as a special adviser on economic policy.
George Papandreou, prime minister, said in a statement that Mr Padoa-Schioppa would advise him on economic issues “specifically macro-economics, taxation, banking and the management of public debt.”
He would also contribute to policymaking on fiscal and structural reform under Greece’s three-year bail-out package by the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
Mr Padoa-Schioppa was rigorous in putting Italy’s public finances in order as a member of the centre-left government of Romano Prodi, reducing the budget deficit and the ratio of debt to gross to domestic product.
