The European Union’s top economic official has forecast that Greece’s economy will recover in the second half of 2011 after what would be the country’s longest recession in memory.

Olli Rehn, EU economic and monetary affairs commissioner, said on Thursday: ”Greece will start seeing the end of the tunnel next year with growth turning positive in the second half.”

Mr Rehn visited Athens two days after Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, in a joint push to smooth local political tensions over Greece’s EU-IMF bail-out and accelerate the reform process.
