Greece: Tax Official Fired for Failing to Increase Revenues

The finance minister has fired the country’s top tax official for failing to increase revenue collections, efforts seen as critical if Greece is to meet its debt obligations, ministry officials said. The tax official, Dimitris Georgakopoulos, who was in charge of dozens of tax collection offices, submitted his resignation on Wednesday after a performance evaluation, the officials said. Greece had budgeted for a 5.5 percent increase. In its latest progress report on Greek fiscal and structural reforms, the European Union had noted “persistent deficiencies in tax collection.”
