Senior Athens tax official quits

Greece’s senior tax official has resigned amid mounting concern over an unexpected revenue shortfall in the first two months of this year.

Dimitris Georgakopoulos, a secretary-general at the finance ministry, stepped down on Wednesday, citing personal reasons.

A political appointee, Mr Georgakopoulos took the blame for what the European Commission described as “persistent deficiencies in tax collection” in its latest progress report on Greek fiscal and structural reforms.

The government’s ability to modernise the tax system and crack down on pervasive tax evasion is seen as a key issue in the battle to avoid a sovereign default.
